2013 Race Information
The premier Monroe road race that began 21 years ago as a local Jaycees community-service project with just over 200 runners has evolved over the years to become a major regional 5K race and kids fun run with over 700 runners in 2012. “After 20 years the Sprint continues to be one of Monroe’s biggest community events and its popularity is based on the fact that it allows families, neighbors, and friends to come together and celebrate healthy living and physical fitness,” says Dr. Paul Moyse, Co-Director of the race for over 20 years. “Where else in your everyday life do you see onlookers applauding wildly as Grandma and Grandpa cross the finish line hand-in-hand with their preschool grandchildren? "
Last year’s 20th Annual Sprint for Monroe brought together an impressive 700-plus runners and walkers who successfully completed the 5K race and raised over $7,000.00. Proceeds from the 2012 race supported the following groups: $2,000 was given to the Monroe Police Department to purchase a thermal imaging device; $1,000 was given to the Monroe Education Foundation; $1,000 was given to Masuk H.S. Color guard to purchase silks and flags; $1,000 was given to Masuk H.S. Track team to purchase track equipment; $1,000 was given to the Monroe Food Pantry; $1,000 was given to Project Warmth; $500 was given to the Special Olympics World Games via the Monroe Police Department; and the remaining money was kept for the 2013 race. This year’s race, sponsored by the Kimball Group, will continue in its tradition to support youth programs, educational initiatives and other local not-for-profit groups.
